Information on the law of January 2006 concerning smoking in public places: who it affects and where it impacts.
As of 1st January 2006 smoking (cigarettes, cigars and pipes) has been banned in public
places in Spain.
The ban includes all work places (which must be smoke free) as well as public transport, public offices, shops, schools, hospitals, theatres, bars and restaurants where smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas or venues. The law was agreed by a majority vote in the Spanish parliament in December 2005.
