Gay Associations

COGAM (the lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual collective of Madrid) is a non-profit organisation that aims to defend Human Rights and works to make society more inclusive in an effort to eradicate homophobic/transphobic behaviours and discrimination against people affected by HIV.

Madrid International Gay and Lesbian Experience (MINGLE) is a multinational group of English-speaking gay men and women meet for outings and activities (trips to the cinema, theatre, concerts, exhibitions, evenings out, mountain walks and so on). Ages range from 20 to 50s and straight friends are welcome. Members receive notification of group events and other events of interest in Madrid. Join via the website.

Age of Consent

The age of consent in Spain is 13, as specified by the Spanish Penal Code, Articles 181(2) and 183.

Homosexual acts have been legal in Spain since 1822 (with the exception of the offence of "habitual homosexual acts" in the years 1928-32). A new Criminal Code was introduced in 1995 which specified an age of consent of 12 under Article 181f for all sexual acts; and this was raised to 13 a few years later.
