The Jarama circuit (Circuito del Jarama) hosted the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix nine times. After 1981 it was decided that the track was no longer suitable for modern racing, but it still hosts sports car and motorbike racing events.

Running

The Madrid Marathon (Maraton Popular de Madrid) is an important athletics event held in the Spanish capital. Each year it attracts approximately 120,000 runners and one million supporters, including some of the world's best athletes and national and international sporting organisations.

Started in 1978, the 42-kilometre marathon takes place on the last Sunday in April. The event also includes a Pasta Party social afternoon for runners and supporters in preparation for the race.

Bullfighting

Bullfighting (corrida de toros) is one of Spain's oldest sporting traditions. Madrid's main bullring is La Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas del Espíritu Santo, situated to the east of the city. It is the largest bullring in Spain and the second largest in the world.

From March to October, bullfights are organised every Sunday night from 19:00 at Las Ventas. During the annual San Isidro festival in May and June, bullfights are arranged every evening for three weeks. Special daily bullfights are also organised as part of Madrid's Autumn Festival (Feria d'Otoño) at the end of September.
